Vermont History Expo 2012: Vermont in the Civil War
This weekend my husband and I are ridiculously excited to take our daughter to her first Vermont History Expo (not that she will remember it, but we will take lots of pictures) at the Tunbridge Fairgrounds. In addition to being an awesome high school history teacher, my husband is also a Civil War re-enactor with the Hemlocks. (Have I mentioned that we met at an American Revolution course for teachers in Virginia? We also got married at the Old Stone House complete with a contra dance – we are quite the history nerds!) Anyway, the Hemlocks are doing an encampment this weekend at the Expo complete with musket loading and…

Travel Cheap: Mom-Kid, Family Roadtrip Adventure Tips
I love to explore with my kids. Our flexible homeschooling lifestyle allows for lots of mom-kid adventure, even if the adventure is just to the local grocery store (trust me, with the kids in tow, there’s always a story to tell…for better or worse) or to an activity on the other side of town. My tiny, tiny *deal* obsession also makes exploration and travel adventure possible without breaking the budget. Recently, I piled the kids in the car and headed toward NYC. “Piling” is indeed the correct word apparently. Summer 2012 Creative Theater and Movement Classes for Preschoolers, School Aged Kids at Catamount Arts, Vermont Children’s Theater
Theater participation is an enriching experience for children. It’s a powerful way to gain self-confidence, comfort with speaking and performing in front of others, and knowledge of theatrics. The Northeast Kingdom is an awesome place for discovering theater and children’s theater opportunities. There’s Vermont Children’s Theater in Lyndonville. There’s Vermont Family Theatre in Irasburg. Of course, there’s also the School of Creative and Performing Arts Camp (SOCAPA) that takes place annually in the NEK, QNEK and Kingdom County Productions. This summer there are also a number of creative acting and movement workshops for children around the NEK, including workshops led in Lyndonville at Vermont’s Children Theater (Darling Hill Road) and in St.…

Summer Kindermusik in Derby
This spring I was finally able to take Sweet Pea out in public, something I’d been looking forward to for six very long months. But what does one do with an infant in the NEK? Kindermusik was my answer! Amy Gillespie , who runs the NEK Kindermusik program, placed an ad in the paper and as soon as I saw it I knew it was for us. The class we took ran for five weeks (six, including the make-up date) and included children ages 0-18 months. Although Sweet Pea is too young to sing along she had a wonderful time looking at and playing with the other babies in class…
